Celtic Cross

The most comprehensive tarot spread — a complete map of your situation, inside and out.

What Is the Celtic Cross?

The Celtic Cross is the most iconic and widely used tarot spread in the world. Developed from early 20th century occult traditions, it provides a comprehensive view of a situation from multiple angles: the present moment, the immediate challenge, the foundation, recent past, near future, the querent's internal state, external influences, hopes and fears, and the ultimate outcome. It is the standard spread for deep, thorough readings.

🎯 Best Used For

  • Complex life questions that need multi-dimensional exploration
  • Major life decisions
  • Understanding all the forces at play in a situation
  • When you want both practical and spiritual perspective
  • When one card feels insufficient for the question's depth

🃏 Card Positions

1
The Present

The central energy or situation at the heart of your question right now.

2
The Crossing Card

The immediate challenge, obstacle, or influence crossing your path — placed sideways over card 1.

3
The Foundation

The root of the situation — past events, deep beliefs, or subconscious influences underlying everything.

4
The Recent Past

Energy that is just leaving or recently concluded — what brought you to this point.

5
The Crown

What you are consciously aiming for, hoping for, or thinking about — the best possible outcome.

6
The Near Future

What is likely to unfold in the next few weeks if the current energy continues.

7
The Querent

Your current state: how you see yourself in this situation, or the energy you are bringing to it.

8
External Influences

Environmental factors, other people, and external forces affecting the situation.

9
Hopes and Fears

What you most hope for AND most fear — often the same card holds both, revealing the tension.

10
The Outcome

The most likely outcome if current energies continue. This is potential, not destiny — choices can shift it.

📋 How to Do the Celtic Cross — Step by Step

  1. Shuffle your deck thoroughly while holding your question clearly in mind. When ready, stop and cut the deck.
  2. Lay card 1 face up in the center. Lay card 2 sideways across card 1 — this is the crossing card.
  3. Below card 1, place card 3 (Foundation). Above card 1, place card 5 (Crown). To the left of card 1, place card 4 (Recent Past). To the right, place card 6 (Near Future).
  4. To the right of this cross, create a vertical column of four cards: card 7 at the bottom, card 8 above it, card 9 above that, card 10 at the top.
  5. Turn all cards over and begin reading from card 1 outward, building a narrative that connects each position.
  6. Read each card in its position first, then look for themes, patterns, and tensions across the spread as a whole.

✨ Pro Tips

  • Read the cross formation (cards 1-6) as the story of the situation, and the staff (cards 7-10) as the journey of the querent through it.
  • If cards 9 (Hopes & Fears) and 10 (Outcome) are the same, it means your greatest fear AND greatest hope may both come true — or that you are unconsciously creating your feared outcome.
  • Major Arcana cards in position 10 carry extra weight — they signal a significant, perhaps fated, development.
  • Court cards in position 8 often represent actual people in your life influencing the situation.
  • If the overall spread feels contradictory, look to card 7 (The Querent) for the key — your own energy is often the variable.

✨ Reading Affirmation

I see clearly from all angles. Every card illuminates a truth I am ready to receive.
